6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
-- 1 Timothy 6:6-10
Paul tells Timothy to be careful of worldly things, because it'll be really easy to get sucked into all that, and lose sight of what's really important & why we are living. Money, cars, clothes, etc. Of course not back then, but they had equivalents. Even now people who are trying to live good, Christian lives, deal with many of these issues. Why can't we just be satisfied and content with God's love and grace? Why can't we be happy with what we already have? He already provides us with food and the clothes on our back; do we really need to get ahead of ourselves, and worry about bags, shoes, money, etc..? There are plenty-- PUHH-LENNTYY of people out there who don't even know when/what will be their next meal, and we are here worrying that we don't make 6 digits.
I really should be talking into a mirror right now. I lovvvvvve materialistic things, and once i get my paycheck, it's gone within that week. I spend and spend and spend on useless, tangible things. I'm grateful for all the things i have, but at the end of the day, i already have everything i need - the breath in my lungs, a family (& friends) who cares for me, and a Supreme God who loves me.
I don't want to become like a person who's described in this passage. I don't want to become so engrossed in moneymaking and other worldly goods, that i lose sight of God. Verse 10 says money is the root of all kinds of evil. That's so true, but i also think the opposite can be true too. I think money can be the root of all kinds of good. I think, and hope, that God uses the rich to help the poor people. It's a really childish way of saying/thinking it like this, but you can't really delve any deeper into that. Use the money to help -> teach -> evangelize those who have no access to anythingg.
When we don't have this bag, those shoes, that much money, people might talk. They might judge as to why i don't have this & that, and that i'm missing out on a lot of the world's pleasures. What they don't know is while i'm missing out on this life, they'll be missing out on the next life with Christ.
good verse.
