7 "Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?"
1 Kings 3
***
Poor Solomon is all scared because God gave him the huge responsibility of leading a nation. aaand, to follow in the footsteps of King David is a huge task. Instead of carrying his head all high and thinking he could do it, he realizes the magnitude of this task and that he probably won't be able to do it all on his own. This puts him in a place where God exactly wants him to be. Solomon humbles himself and asks God for help and guidance, and it's genuine.
In this world, especially this country, everyone prizes individuality. There are plenty of ads about self-made men/women, and those people are virtually set as our examples. But it seems, as so many other times, that God wants the exact opposite. He wants us to figure out that this world is too big and we are nothing, and we need the power and help of someone like God. And this is why He sometimes puts us in places where we feel like there's nothing else that we can do, and then that's when we enlist the help of God. A prayer of "God, i don't know what I'm doing. I need your help. Your wisdom."
