7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Peter's talking about trials and sufferings here; God doesn't necessarily give us sufferings but allows us to go through them so that like gold and other precious metals, we'll become hardened and stronger through the fire. Whenever we're about to sing "Refiner's Fire", PaulCHOI always says how the song is nice, but the meaning is actually a pretty serious and scary thing, because when we sing that song, we're basically asking God to put us through the fire. Put us in the middle of the suffering so that in our weakness, God's glory shows.
14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
I guess being God's child comes with the ability to recognize evil from good. The real test is, though, can we walk the walk and not just talk the talk?
