The other night, before I slumped my head against the pillow, I reached for my Bible. It is uncanny how the Lord chooses to speak to His children, and having no scripture in mind, I flipped open the Book with all the answers. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but turned the pages until a scripture stood out.
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first” 1 Thessalonians 4:16
Have you ever wondered what words exactly God will shout? It will be the command that closes one age and opens another. Although my eye lids drooped, my mind whirled with the possibilities. Would the words reverberate between the mountains, causing them to tumble into the depths of the sea? Would even the birds stop their singing? Realizing there were no answers, I allowed my imagination to wander.
“It is finished.”
I glanced around my room, noting the shadows my beside lamp cast around me. My chest rose and fell, and I propped myself against the headboard, clearing my mind of the invading sleepiness. Why had I heard those words?
Another scripture came to mind. Flipping to my concordance in my Bible, I found what I was looking for.
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” John 19:30
On the final day, could it be that the very words Jesus uttered as He completed Salvation’s plan, would be the same words God would shout across the face of the earth? For many people in the world, these will be first audible words God has ever spoken to them. I shivered. Turning off my bedside lamp, I crawled beneath the covers, shutting my eyes and opening my thoughts to this final day.
It is finished.
Your pain will be over.
Your loneliness will be no more.
It is finished.
There will be no more time.
No chance to forgive those that wronged you.
Or to ask forgiveness from those you wronged.
….
….
Time is, after all, finished.
